Everyone has nerves.
Nerves. Everyone has them at some point in their lives. Those anxious butterflies in their stomach. That pounding heartbeat in their chest that seems to want to burst out thier head. That overwhelming voice that echos when it asks “Can I do this?”
The kart is the most pure racing vehicle ever created. It has the essential components found in all racing machinery. A tuned chassis, strong brakes and a motor designed to be revved to within an inch of its life.
Nothing will train your body to have a more immersive experience with a race track than a kart. Nothing at all. You’re sitting as one with the machine, as the entire chassis is flexing around you. You feel every camber change and every change in grip surface interacting with your body immediately.
You want pure racing? You want karting.
Honestly, I’m not sure what to title this post, seeing that I wanted to put so many things in it. Now that it’s the winter time, I figured it was a good idea to do a end of the year wrap up post. Seeing that it’s been a few months since the last Gold Cup race, I’d been holding off on any new posts for a little while, as I’ve been wrapping up the year and prepping for 2015.
A few years ago, I found myself attracted to competition karting, not only because of the amount of seat time that you can get, but because of the types of people who make up the sport.
Just taking a look at this historic kart demonstration in the UK, you can easily see how much the look of race karts have changed over the last 50 years. Sidepods, bumpers, larger curb weight. Karts now are definitely much safer that they were in the old days.
However, at the same time, some will argue that the safety factor has made it possible for some drivers to reduce their driving standards, because they can touch pods can get away with a little “bump and run”. That wouldn’t even be a conversation starter in these vintage karts. You’d just flip and crash.
Still, it’s interesting to see how the technology has evolved, eh?

This year was my first time competing in a regional kart series. I took part in the IKF Region 6 Gold Cup. Now that the season is over, I’ve had a few friends who just wanted to have a quick summary on how the racing season went, so I figured that I would give a quick post on that.
