Everyone knows about Senna vs Prost. We don’t need to go into that. Both were epic drivers, for very different reasons. However, very rarely do people take an opportunity to compare qualifying laps between the two drivers side by side.
However, take a look at this video from 1989, during the Japanese Grand Prix. Senna, who was known as the master of qualifying, out-paced his teammate Prost by 1.7 seconds in the same car. That’s another lifetime in racing terms.
So what happens if you tried to race a BTCC bike with a lawnmower? Well, you’d need to start out with something pretty special, right?.
Although none of us had ever met him, most of us who write for this blog love Aryton Senna. |StartingGrid| has written several articles about him, including a very special one which features photos from the San Marino Grand Prix taken by one of readers on that tragic day of May 1st, 1994.
Out of respect, I had planned to write an entire article about Senna. However, posts of that kind can be found all throughout the internet. I decided that today would be better spent in quiet reflection. Not only about the passing of Aryton Senna, but how we spend the rest of our time on this planet.
What does any of that have to with Ayrton Senna? Senna was a man who not only chased after his dreams. He spent his life pushing himself to become better, stronger and faster. His single-minded focus, belief and dedication moved generations of people throughout the world, and changed our perceptions about what one person could accomplish.
That impact should be respected and never forgotten. We should all strive to reach such greatness. Even if we fail to make it, those who do will be more successful than those who fail to try. So with those thoughts in mind today, take a moment to remember Senna.

Just realized that we’ve been posting a lot of Formula 1 content, because of the excitement leading up to the new season, so I wanted to make sure that we didn’t miss our ‘regular’ car followers too. Thanks to RA64 Freddy for the find.
In the interest of getting to know the readers a bit better (and have them get to know me a bit better), I wanted to pose a couple of questions:
What was your first race car? (If you have never raced, what was the first car that really captured your imagination?)
My first race car was a 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. This was the first generation chassis, and it was a 4-door manual. I beat this car up at autocrosses, rallycrosses, off-pavement TSD rallies, and track days. It was put into service at the end of 2000 and retired from service at the end of 2005.
This car was pretty darn gutless, but it was also incredibly stable on-throttle. Even on packed snow, you could just stand on it.
It was a great starter car, but it also taught horrible driving habits. The only real incident the car suffered was the result of a miscommunication between my co-driver and I on a winter rally (oh… turn here!)… I put the car into a snow bank, but backed right out and kept on going.
If Subaru would sell me a new one of these, I’d buy it.
