Street Parked: 1956 Thunderbird Airport Emergency Car

Only in Las Vegas. This car is a replica of the Las Vegas airport’s lead/emergency car from 1956 to 1968. It somehow seems appropriate for a car like this to guide to gates the airplanes that carried the Rat Pack and Marilyn Monroe.

The Thunderbird was designed to be a “Personal Luxury Car” even though its styling lends it a sporting look. They weren’t slow cars by any means, this 1956 likely has a Y-block V8 engine producing just over 200 horsepower, which probably made it a sprightly accelerator. T-birds could be had with a three speed manual or automatic transmission and appear to be a decent platform for an emergency response vehicle (check out the deck mounted fire bottles in the photos below).
