Top Gear- History of Saab (Video)

When I was two or three, my parents had a Saab 900 Turbo Aero S. We used to go for rides in it all the time. I thought it was pretty quick, but I didn’t really get what kind of car it was until I was older. That was the one I wish they had kept for when I got my driver’s license.

I’ve always had a longing eye for the Saab Turbo, and a soft spot for the Saab marque. When we learned the Swedish company was being axed, I found myself thinking about that old car.

I wonder if I’ll ever get one of my own… Maybe one day.

  1. This is a great video. The Top Gear fellows say that you can’t be a true motoring enthusiast until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo. I agree with that sentiment. However, I’ll go one step further and say that the best way to ruin your opinion of other car companies’ engineering is to own a Saab.

My 9000 Aero (1994, the good year – no traction control) is phenomenally powerful and ferocious when you want it to be, yet refined and economical when you are in the presence of State Troopers or your in-laws.

I chuckle at the chorus of complaints about torque steer and understeer bellowed by uninformed, inexperienced, or just the hack-handed behind the wheel. I’ve never been bothered by torque steer. Torque, yes, particularly when a wheel breaks loose and starts spinning while hard on the throttle in 3rd gear while getting on the freeway or passing a recalcitrant M3.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Saab but happy to have the pleasure of owning mine.
